Leaky Gut

highlighted-stomach

As people began to talk about their multiple issues during a support group meeting for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, I noticed that they all had digestive issues in common. Many talked about something called, “Leaky Gut,” “Candida,” “probiotics,” and how wheat was a big trigger. I had multiple allergies and intolerances and there was no way I was going to stay away from another food.

My son had been in to see a specialist and she told me that we should all get off of wheat because of how harsh it is for EDSers and that it may be contributing to malabsorption of vitamins in our food: specifically Magnesium. She also suggested that my youngest son, who was chewing on a paper airplane in her office, would benefit greatly from this, as well. I made a decision to cut down on bread in the house and add in some supplements. (Although, I felt I had no idea what I was doing.)

By the end of the year, I began experiencing Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Insomnia, and my other issues had grown worse: Anxiety, Depression, Andenomyosis, Chronic Pain, and now a wheat intolerance. I was already looking into Hyperactivity, Learning, and Behavior Issues for my boys and ran across a natural solution for those things.

I talked to my primary doctor throughout all of my issues. I asked him about “Leaky Gut.” He said that he wasn’t sure, but it “could be.” He suggested I go to a gastroenterologist for my new issue with wheat.

Gastroenterologist Donald Kirby, MD, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the Cleveland Clinic says, “Physicians don’t know enough about the gut, which is our biggest immune system organ. ‘Leaky gut syndrome’ isn’t a diagnosis taught in medical school. Instead, ‘leaky gut’ really means you’ve got a diagnosis that still needs to be made,” Kirby says. “You hope that your doctor is a good-enough Sherlock Holmes, but sometimes it is very hard to make a diagnosis.”

Not all doctors make the effort to get at the root of the problem, and that’s what frequently sends patients to alternative practitioners. So…  what if Leaky Gut WERE the root of the problem causing all of these other problems?

My EDS specialist said that most EDSers have an issue with Leaky Gut because we are so sensitive. She also reiterated that eating wheat for us, is like taking a brillo pad to our stomachs. She gave me a list to work on.

I researched probiotics and was so confused with all the different kinds. Some said the best was in the way it is stored. Some said that it was the kind or how many strains were in it. Some said it had to do with how much you took at a time. I loved the information that came across in webinar for Perfect Biotics. I’m not a purchaser of their product, but the information was wonderful!

So here, I had been struggling with these concepts and what was best for my family and I. And I ran across Dr. Axe. He said to “think of the lining of your digestive tract like a net with extremely small holes in it that only allow specific substances to pass through. Your gut lining works as a barrier keeping out bigger particles that can damage your system.

“When someone has leaky gut (often referred to as increased intestinal permeability), the ‘net’ in your digestive tract gets damaged, which causes even bigger holes to develop in your net, so things that normally can’t pass through, are now be able to.

“Some of the things that can now pass through include proteins like gluten, bad bacteria and undigested foods particles. Toxic waste can also leak from the inside of your intestinal wall into your bloodstream causing an immune reaction.”

Dr. Axe talks about the many different symptoms caused by Leaky Gut: Bloating, Food sensitivities, Thyroid conditions, Fatigue, Joint pain, Headaches, Skin issues like Rosacea, Excema, and Acne, Digestive problems, Weight gain, Syndrome X, and more…

I like Dr. Axe’s program because #1 not everyone is the same and it’s catered to you, #2 I don’t have to guess how to put it all together, #3 It’s the same thing that my specialist was talking about in changing diet and adding supplements, but exactly how. Feel free to let me know your experiences with Leaky Gut, Healing Leaky Gut, or the different programs to do so.

Digestive Health and Healing

digestive-health-reversing-ulcerative-colitis_300 The stomach if VITAL in your everyday health. The intestinal tract is where about 70% of your immune system resides. Much of the beneficial bacteria we would normally obtain through fresh fruits, vegetables, and milk products are removed in modern food preparation processes. Plus diet, stress, travel, and even some medications can encourage the non-beneficial bacteria in your body to flourish. An imbalance of bacteria could lead to a weakened immune system, which means your health is at risk. But if you take care of your body, it will take care of itself.

One of my all-time FAVORITE essential oils is Peppermint!!! For me to remember, it seems to take the power of 3. My mom bought me Peppermint essential oil when I was pregnant with my third. My prior pregnancies, I had been extremely sick for up to 5 months. I would put a drop of Peppermint Essential Oil on my finger and put it on the roof of my mouth. It would stop the nausea for a while. (It is not good for you closer to the end of your pregnancy or during nursing because it can diminish your milk supply) I have since put a drop of Peppermint Essential Oil in a cup of water and drank it down to stop migraines, upset stomach, throwing up, constipation, bloating, or diarrhea. It is awesome for emergency digestive problems. (For children, dilute one drop in a tablespoon of oil and rub on the outside of the stomach)

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL When I first heard about Activated Charcoal, I thought someone was pulling my chain! But seriously, this has great benefits! People have been using activated charcoal for thousands of years. Activated charcoal and regular charcoal are almost identical – the only difference is that activated charcoal has been created solely for medicinal use. It also has an incredibly large surface area due to all of its pores – one cubic inch of charcoal has the surface area equivalent to a 150,000 square-foot field. This is why just a bit of charcoal can absorb so many toxins, atoms, and ions. 45171-Activated-Charcoal Activated Charcoal is used in emergency situations to rid the body of toxins in emergency situations. Hospitals use it for those who have overdosed. People have used it to make a poultice for bee stings and mosquito bites. It’s been used to make a mask for acne. When sprinkled on a toothbrush, it whitens your teeth. Activated Charcoal can also reduce gas or even give your body a nice detox. (Do not use with medication, it will take away the affect of the med) So, if you have a stomach bug… this is great for sucking up the bad bacteria and disposing of it for you.

Probiotics…. while antibiotics destroy the bad with the good bacteria, probiotics help to build the good bacteria to heal the stomach lining and promote the body to fight sicknesses.  Kefir milk and Greek Yogurt are my favorites! My older two children were “allergic” to corn and had to stay away from candy. The doctor did testing and found no actual allergy. Since having Keifer and Greek Yogurt on a regular basis, they are now able to have candy again. (although, I do not promote unhealthy foods. I just don’t have restrict so heavily.)

Many people assume that because yogurt and milk kefir are both cultured dairy products, there isn’t much difference between the two. This is not true. There are many differences between yogurt and milk kefir, including how each is made, the types of bacteria present in each, and the flavor and consistency.

BONE BROTH You may have been offered chicken noodle soup when you have been sick. It’s not necessarily the chicken or the noodles that has been the healer, but the bone broth. Nowadays, you can pick up a can of chicken noodle soup at the store, but with all the processed ingredients that are added, it may not help you at all. However, if you make your own bone broth, you can use it to make your own chicken noodle soup and it can help your family a great deal.

bone broth

The gelatin in bone broth protects and heals the mucous lining of the digestive tract and helps aid in the digestion of nutrients. A study published in the journal Chest shows eating chicken soup during a respiratory infection reduces the number of white blood cells, which are the cells that cause flu and cold symptoms. The glucosamine in bone broth can actually stimulate the growth of new collagen, repair damaged joints and reduce pain and inflammation. The collagen and gelatin in bone broth supports hair growth and helps to keep your nails strong. The calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in bone broth helps our bones to grow and repair. Bone broth is very high in the anti-inflammatory amino acids glycine and proline. The amino acid glycine found in bone broth can be very calming. So there you have it, Bone Broth is great for you body.

I am not a doctor. I am a mom who researches natural answers for our family. I hope that it helps you. It is important to remember that all Bodies are different. Please follow the recommended dosages. It’s also important to remember that not ONE herb can heal every person. If you cannot handle the smell of a particular herb, stay AWAY from it. There were many herbs created that heal the same thing. God knew that each of our bodies are different and accommodated for that. It is also important to make sure that we watch our diet and exercise, as well. Research your ailment, medications that may interact, and potential allergies. Essential oils are potent, so use them the way they were intended. Some are only aromatic or topical, and many are able to be ingested. Some you can use without diluting them, others are not for children. Other oils that can help with these ailments include:

Bloating: DigestZen

Constipation: Rosemary, Lemon, Peppermint, Marjoram, DigestZen, Ginger, Fennel, Orange, Rose, Juniper Berry, Sandalwood

Diarrhea: Peppermint, Ginger, Geranium, DigestZen, Orange, Patchouli, Melalueca, Sandalwood, Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Cypress, Eucalyptus

Antibiotics Kill!

antibiotics

My family and I have been through MANY antibiotics for various infections. In fact, the damage to our stomach lining is so bad that it has caused an INCREASING number of food allergies and other problems. My number one goal this year is to heal our family. First, I conquered sicknesses and infections. Now, I’m on a mission to heal the stomach from all the damage done. First of all, let me help you understand why I feel it is so important.

Up to 4 lbs of your body weight comes from bacteria. The average person has around 400 different types of friendly bacteria, mainly resident in the digestive tract, which are forever multiplying. These bacteria are the first line of defense against unfriendly bacteria and other disease-producing microbes including viruses and fungi. They also make some vitamins and digest fibre, allowing us to derive more nutrients from otherwise indigestible food

Like pesticides, the purpose of antibiotic drugs is to kill life (anti-bio). But as well as destroying pathogenic bacteria, antibiotics also destroy friendly ones. The more ‘broad spectrum’ the antibiotic, the more strains of beneficial bacteria will also be killed. A single course of antibiotics can wipe out beneficial strains of bacteria for SIX MONTHS or more!

“When you take antibiotics, you are doing to your body what a farmer does when he sprays his fields with pesticides” says medical researcher Geoffrey Cannon, author of the book Superbug.

According to microbiologist, Professor Richard Lacey, the widespread overuse of antibiotics is the major cause of changes observed in the last decade in the balance of bacteria in the gut. Overuse of antibiotics, in particular ampicillin and tetracyclines, is resulting in a generation of new strains of ‘superbugs’ – bacteria which have become resistant to the very drugs designed to destroy them. Medical researcher Dr Stuart Levy from Tufts University says that these changes are “unparalleled in recorded biologic history”. So serious is the problem that now there are new drug-resistant versions of every disease-causing bacterium. Drug-resistant tuberculosis, for example, now accounts for one in seven new cases.

It’s not just antibiotics, but the whole mentality of developing drugs to kill bugs that needs to be questioned. After all, vast improvements in sanitation in the Western world have been achieved this century, and, in the last twenty years, medicine has doled out billions of anti-biotic, anti-viral and anti-fungal medicines. If this approach was working you’d expect less overall deaths from infections and less cases of food poisoning. In fact, exactly the opposite has occurred.

The best way to fight infection is to have a strong immune system in the first place and the right balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut. If a pathogen does then conic along, your natural defenses can fight it off. But what if you do succumb to an infection?

Instead of giving a drug to wipe out the enemy, specific strains of beneficial bacteria are given to reinforce the body’s natural defenses. For example, giving children probiotics has been shown to halve the recovery time.

I am excited that we have taken the first step this year to strengthen our immune system this year! Check out my blog post on how I have helped my family to fight and prevent sicknesses, infections, cuts, and asthmatic reactions in our home.
